Synopsis:

Exciting, striking, full of unexpected twists, wistful and melancholic, dramatic, melodramatic, always emotional and sincere – the TV series “THE NAME IS VARVARA” reveals to the viewer what hides in the shadows of life, showing how human life (according to the latest findings) looks in today’s modern world. Without a classic main protagonist, but with Varvara as the first among equals, the series, across twelve episodes, carefully depicts the fates of several main characters, all driven by the same goal – the pursuit of happiness. Guided by different understandings of happiness and spanning various genres, the characters rush to seize it, to reach it, while some of them are merely fleeing from misfortune (which chases them to catch up and hold them tight). Milena, a young girl who has already endured indescribable suffering at an early age, asks God for salvation and comfort. She dares not even ask for happiness. God agrees to help, giving her the name Varvara, so that no one can recognize or hurt her anymore. Vladimir, Sanja, and Filip form a small family without happiness. Filip is ill, Vladimir seeks happiness with Mina. She cannot give it to him, she does not have it herself.

Varvara is in love with Isidor (who is not really called that). Isidor is a criminal with a heart, and he loves God’s daughter Varvara. He is in prison, she is in a monastery. They still love each other, even more than before. And so on – many characters, many incredible but true life stories. All genres are present: drama, melodrama, thriller, fantasy, absurd, a touch of horror, and a bit of comedy.

Season 1

Episode 1

On an empty road across the plains, young Mina hitchhikes without a clear destination. In an ambulance, she meets Trapi, and their journey turns into an intimate conversation between two strangers carrying their own losses and disappointments. At a monastery, young nun Varvara suppresses her physical and emotional unrest, trying to find peace within a strict daily routine.

Episode 2

Vladimir encounters Mina, who unexpectedly appears as a translator for a French delegation. Their meeting becomes a clash of two generations and two worldviews. In a village, we follow Milena, a teenage girl living in harsh social conditions.

Episode 3

A young man from a yacht goes through a series of suspicious checks and unusual delays, as it is gradually revealed that he is involved in something far more serious than a simple seasonal job. As cracks in Sanja and Vladimir’s marriage become increasingly visible, Milena, in a painful conversation with nun Efimija, tells her own story for the first time, symbolically beginning a new life.

Episode 4

Isidor tries to rid himself of the burden he carries by transferring danger from one world to another, convinced this will help him regain control. At the same time, a bandit appears at the monastery, bringing a looming threat with him.

Episode 5

In the silence of the monastery, the nuns carry out an act that will shift the balance between faith, guilt, and silence. Meanwhile, Vladimir ventures deeper into the realm of informal solutions, searching for a man whose knowledge lies on the boundary between science and magic.

Episode 6

Strange signs begin to appear where silence was meant to remain untouched, reminding the nuns that the past cannot be easily buried. Mina confronts her own fear and makes a decision that irreversibly changes her life.

Episode 7

Mina finds refuge with Vladimir, while the fight for Filip’s life reaches a critical point, leaving Sanja completely exposed to loss. On the edge of despair, an unexpected encounter prevents a final collapse.

Episode 8

Help arrives from afar but clashes with alternative approaches to treatment. The young man from the yacht tries to escape his past. Vladimir faces serious questions for the first time about his own role in Mina’s case..

Episode 9

Sanja’s life takes on a new structure that allows her to endure everyday reality. At the same time, Varvara erases the boundary between duty and emotion. Mina receives news that closes one chapter of her life.

Episode 10

An unexpected visit from a mother at the hospital points to the possibility of a different life after everything, yet escape remains the only option. At the women’s monastery, Varvara receives a letter she did not expect.

Episode 11

Varvara feels the need to confront what she left behind but meets a wall. As the conversations that follow lead to the collapse of a family unit, Mina prepares a plan to escape.

Episode 12

An escape and a chance encounter bring together two young women who only then realize they share the same wound. Their journey leads them to a place both see as a possible new beginning. As the police close one circle of the investigation, traces of crime disappear in fire, erasing the evidence.

Dejan Zečević is a Serbian film and television director. He was born on February 1, 1972. He graduated from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in 1997, in the Film and TV Directing department.
To date, he has directed four feature films (writing the screenplay for two of them and co-writing one). His films have won over 30 awards at domestic film festivals.

Award at the March Festival for short fiction film; Aleksandar Saša Petrović Award for Best Film at the Festival of Auteur Film; Golden Mimosa for Best Director at the Herceg Novi festival; Golden Arena for Best Film and Golden Arena for Best Director in Novi Sad; FIPRESCI Award for Director of the Year. He has also participated with his films at foreign festivals (Brussels, Luxembourg, Sitges, Athens, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Toulouse, Kyiv, Pucón…).
He teaches film directing at the private film school Dunav Film. Recently he has been working extensively on commercials and television programs.
