Vera Kroner, a Jewish girl from Novi Sad, realizes in early 1941 that she must escape. She fails and ends up in Auschwitz. She survives. She tries to return to a normal life, but she can’t. She drinks and is haunted by the horrific memories of the camp. She moves to Germany to live with her mother, but there is no escape. In 1991, war comes again. Now an elderly woman, she decides that she no longer wants to live in a world where wars never end.
